At the Sept. 6 meeting the Village of Michiana council took informational actions on several planning and infrastructure matters that remain in the planning stage.
Council member Mike Mumper said the village’s federally funded water project is moving forward; the village engineering firm Merritt is preparing bids for phase one and EPA approval for a new pump is required before installation. Mumper emphasized that federal funding brings compliance obligations tied to the project.
On planning, Planning Commission Chair Julie Bonello said the commission will update the Village Master Plan following the format of the 2005 plan, prepare a letter of intent and draft an RFP for consultants. At the Sept. 13 workshop (9–11 a.m. EST) commissioners will outline consultant needs. Mike Botelho moved to pause Sport Courts construction until the Master Plan framework is completed; Tim McCarthy seconded and the motion passed 5–0.
Council also noted that Police Chief Ryan Layman will route a revised police contract to Grand Beach for review and that both village councils are expected to review and vote on the contract at their October meetings.
These items were informational and procedural: no final contract award for the water project or consultant selection was made at this meeting, and the police contract remained pending interjurisdictional review.
