The Village of Michiana Council on Dec. 13 authorized Council President Tim McCarthy to work with Police Chief Ryan Layman and Village Attorney Sara Senica on decisions related to an ongoing vandalism investigation after 12 trees were cut down on village beach property.
Police Chief Ryan Layman told the council a sign had been posted at Stop 40 asking anyone with information to come forward about the vandalism. Because the council will not meet in January or February, McCarthy moved to empower himself to coordinate with the police and attorney on urgent decisions and to provide updates to the full council; the motion, seconded by Mike Botelho, passed on a 5–0 roll call vote.
The measure gives the council a single point of contact during the meeting hiatus while investigative or administrative steps proceed. Chief Layman will continue to handle investigative details, and McCarthy said he will keep the council informed through police or the village office if decisions are required.
The council has not named any suspects and no formal charges were announced at the meeting. The next regular council meeting is scheduled for March 13, 2025, when members said they expect to receive further updates if available.
