Wellness committee restarts; solar savings and mental-health priorities highlighted

Justin presented a brief update on the wellness and workforce/mental-health committee, describing efforts to reconstitute the group and focus on a short list of priorities for the coming year.
Justin said the district's early solar installations (bus garage and partial Lincoln site) have produced local savings; "$6,500 a month on just a portion of what is to come," he told the board, and said that money should go toward students. He characterized the wellness work as a "restart" for the committee and said membership now includes administrators, the district nurse, food-service representation, PE and health teachers, community partners and at least one board member.
The committee used a survey to narrow its initial agenda to a short list: elementary recess practices; family and student education on screen time and impacts on sleep; increased staff health and wellness; connections between social media and self-harm; middle-school health curriculum and transition supports; and mental-health symptom recognition. Justin said the group hopes to recruit students next year and complete the triannual progress reflection update.
Next steps include expanding membership (including student representation), completing the triannual update and planning professional development or in-service wellness training for staff later in the year.
The board did not take action on wellness items at this meeting; Justin invited questions and said the committee will report back as projects develop.
