Wolverine Lake board urges homeowners to sign petitions to start sewer special assessment district

The Wolverine Lake Management Board used part of its meeting to press homeowners to sign petitions for a special assessment district (SAD) that would fund sewer connections across portions of the village.

Chair (Speaker 1) said a SAD would allow residents to spread the cost of connecting to the city sewer over a 10-year property-tax assessment rather than paying the full connection cost up front. He said a minimum of 30 households must sign a petition to develop a SAD; at the meeting the Chair estimated the board currently had "nearly 15" sign-ups.

Committee member (Speaker 4) described a phased outreach plan: the first notices will go to people who already expressed interest but have not yet connected, followed by outreach to lakefront residents or those with street sewer infrastructure. The board emphasized that signing a petition does not obligate immediate connection; several members noted residents can withdraw later after informational Q&A with city staff.

The Chair said sign-ups are being taken at Village Hall and invited residents on septic with sewer infrastructure on their street to register. There was no formal vote on the SAD at the meeting; the discussion recorded steps for outreach and staff follow-up to determine the precise number of current sign-ups and to coordinate Q&A sessions with city representatives.

Next steps noted in the meeting: the Chair will try to confirm the exact petition threshold in village code and report back; the board will coordinate with the village office to schedule Q&A with city staff if enough sign-ups are collected.
