Harlandale Independent School District trustees discussed a new clear‑backpack policy for the 2026–27 school year during the board’s June 17 meeting, with administrators saying the change aims to reduce the risk of students bringing items that resemble weapons and to avoid the logistical problems of installing metal detectors at multiple secondary-school entrances.
A board member summarized the district’s reasoning on safety and practical constraints: “This was our next best solution was to have clear backpacks,” the trustee said, explaining that toys that resemble real guns and the sheer number of entrances and students make metal-detector deployment difficult to staff and operate.
Director of Communications Miss Carza said the district has published a clear-backpack FAQ on its website, harlandale.net/clear, and that the FAQ explains exceptions for athletic bags, band instruments, medically necessary items, diaper bags and media equipment. “We do have an FAQ section, and we do go into detail about athletic bags… we are encouraging, and we're pushing as many parents as we can to this FAQ and to this website,” she said.
Trustees asked administrators to clarify athletic-bag rules and whether the clear-bag requirement would apply at athletic events. Communications staff said an athletic-events bag flyer has been produced and will be circulated; the district is coordinating with vendors and family‑services staff so clear backpacks will be available at the Back to School Bash.
