Michiana council OKs park repairs, narrows pickleball tournament and appoints liaison

At its April 11 meeting, the Village of Michiana Council approved maintenance work and set conditions for a community pickleball tournament while naming a park liaison.
Street Superintendent Rick Reitz presented a $5,800 quote to clean the parking lot, repair major cracks with hot rubberized crack sealant and restripe all markings. Mike Botelho moved to approve the $5,800 expenditure; Tim McCarthy seconded and the motion passed unanimously among members present.
On a separate item, resident Lisa Zirpolo had requested a four-day pickleball tournament. Council limited the event to Friday, Sept. 5 (with a 4 p.m. setup) through Sunday, Sept. 7, noting a four-day closure was too long. The Council required a list of requested Village resources (tables, chairs, cords, etc.) one week before the event. Tim McCarthy made the motion to allow the tournament on the shortened schedule; Mike Botelho seconded and the motion passed.
Tim McCarthy also appointed Council member Mike Mumper as the park liaison. During public comment Pam Schutt complained that some pickleball players had been relieving themselves by the creek; Nancy Thill noted that quieter pickleballs are effective in reducing noise.
Council staff will notify applicants of the event decision and manage logistics for repairs and the tournament.
