River Ridge CDD begins planning for storm-surge resilience, seeks multi-agency coordination

Board members and staff discussed storm-surge risks and resilience planning at the Oct. 22 River Ridge CDD meeting, with the district’s general manager urging proactive coordination across jurisdictions.
Eric Long outlined an action plan to build resilience over five to ten years and proposed creating an advisory or review panel to coordinate engineering, funding and mitigation actions. He described a hypothetical topographic analysis in which a 10–12-foot storm surge could inundate an estimated 45%–55% of the community and asked the board to designate representatives to work with county and state entities. The Army Corps of Engineers has presented ideas in neighboring Collier County, Mr. Long said, but funding and multiyear effort would be required.
The board agreed that Mr. Long and newly appointed supervisor Keith Merrill would assist with coordination and authorized District Engineer Charlie Krebs to provide technical support as necessary. Members emphasized that any work would require intergovernmental cooperation and potentially a decade of planning to implement major structural or landscape changes.
