Director says village will not accept donated Casper log cabin into Dinesville lease without formal plans

Gil, the park and recreation director, updated the commission on a donated historic log cabin from the Casper family that has been dismantled and stored near the historical society.

"The village has not been out any money in this project so far," Gil said, adding the historical society paid to dismantle and transport the structure. He told commissioners the society is asking to add the reconstructed cabin to the village's lease for Dinesville Historical Park, which would transfer maintenance responsibility to the village.

Gil said the building inspector and public works need formal plans — floor plans, grading, doors and other construction details — before the village can accept the structure into the lease. "We have hand-drawn plans of the building, but I think we need more than that to go before the board so that we can include that into the lease agreement," he said.

Commissioners and Gil discussed site specifics: the preferred location is between the barn and other historical buildings, where some apple trees would need removal. Gil voiced personal concern about removing the trees but said the site provides a flat location and trail access.

Gil emphasized that, without certified plans and public-works sign-off, "they're not gonna be able to move forward." He also noted that the cabin will not be open daily for tours; the historical society would organize periodic tours.

Next steps identified by the commission: the historical society should provide formal construction plans for review by the building inspector and public works, and staff will hold further discussions before asking the village board to adopt the cabin into the lease. No formal motion or vote on lease acceptance occurred at this meeting.

The commission asked the historical society to supply engineering-level plans and for staff to report back with building-inspection feedback before any final village action.
