Board opens 30‑day public hearing on districtwide safety plan; transportation annex, AED policy highlighted

Mr. Smith presented the South Huntington Union Free School District’s revised districtwide safety plan during the board’s July 8 meeting and opened the required 30‑day public comment period. He told the board the draft will be posted on the district website for 30 days and a resolution to adopt the plan will be considered at the Aug. 19 board meeting; an approved version will be posted on Sept. 1 and building plans uploaded to NYSED by Oct. 1.
The presentation explained the statutory framework: every building must have its own emergency response team and a confidential, building‑specific emergency response plan, while a nonconfidential districtwide plan explains policies and procedures for responding to threats, contacting law enforcement and families, prevention and intervention strategies, safety training, drill review, and use of security personnel. "This safety plan will appear in our district website for 30 days before being approved," Mr. Smith said.
Mr. Smith identified the largest change in the current draft as a new transportation annex that specifies how district transportation would be used during an emergency. He also noted earlier additions that remain in place, including a cardiac plan and expanded AED availability: the district has placed AEDs on building exteriors and trained administrators in AED and CPR procedures.
During the public hearing a resident asked whether CPR certification covers children; Mr. Smith answered that training includes child mannequins and that newly hired administrators will receive CPR, AED and first‑aid certification. He also praised the district safety coordinator, saying of Jim Beck, "There is truly not a place where you do not see Jim," and acknowledged his role in drills and real‑time communications.
Mr. Smith emphasized that building emergency response plans are confidential and are shared with first responders, while the districtwide plan itself is public. Next steps explained in the meeting: public comment period (30 days), board adoption at the Aug. 19 meeting after that comment period, public posting on Sept. 1, and upload of building plans to the NYSED portal by Oct. 1.
The board closed the hearing after questions and moved on to other business. A copy of the draft is available in the district clerk’s office and on the district website during the comment period.
