Commission schedules spring cleanup, orders picnic tables and plans workshops

The Winchester Conservation Commission used its Feb. 19 meeting to plan spring stewardship and outreach for town conservation properties, including a cleanup at the Wulff Property, procurement of picnic tables and educational workshops.
Commissioner Nat Quevedo said the commission will request a brush hog from the Highway Department and will organize ACCESS crews when the cleanup date is set. The work will need railroad ties for steps and shovels; rakes are already available.
Members discussed ordering three picnic tables from local builder Ian Gardnell at $200 each — one for Forrest Lake and one or two for Wulff. ACCESS offered to assemble tables at Wulff if logistically feasible. The commission also identified landscaping needs at the Musterfield parking lot, the Gardner Mountain entrance area and additional trail spots; pavilion work will be done only as needed.
Quevedo said he contacted Tucker Carston and Dingmans/Pickard's to coordinate and asked ACCESS to update flyers for volunteer recruitment. He also said he will plan workshops on the invasive spotted lanternfly and on macroinvertebrate testing to support volunteer monitoring and stewardship efforts.
Next steps include scheduling the cleanup date, confirming equipment borrowing from the Highway Department and finalizing the picnic-table orders and assembly plan.
