Bannock County faces a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar decision on fairgrounds barns and upgrades

The Bannock County Fair Board urged commissioners to consider major capital investments after reporting notable growth in livestock entries and event participation.

Fair Board members said some barns on the fairgrounds are past their useful life and urged either a phased replacement of four pole barns at an estimated $940,000 or a single large multiuse building that could cost about $1.8 million (plus additional options pushing a no-post, open-span design toward $2 million). Board members said a single large building would consolidate livestock housing and allow year-round arena use, while a phased approach—replacing individual barns—would reduce upfront county costs.

Commissioners emphasized constraints: fair-maintenance reserves are roughly $250,000, and the county is balancing many capital requests. They discussed exploring sponsorship agreements that would let the county own the building while selling annual naming-right packages to recoup costs, and suggested the board return with detailed phased cost estimates, usage projections and any prospective sponsor commitments.

The board also asked for modest operating increases if a new building is not approved this year, including additional tent rental and internet improvements for fair operations and extra prize money to support a rapidly growing Kid Ranch Rodeo.
