Historical society asks Bannock County for continued support as museum faces upkeep and staffing shortfalls

Tom Eisenhower, financial director for the historical society, said attendance runs about 3,000'3,500 visitors annually, with many out-of-state visitors generated by Oregon Trail interest. He said the society absorbed a $24,000 revenue loss last year by not filling its director position and is now asking the county for approximately $73,000 to cover operations and to provide small hourly raises for on-site staff who currently earn about $12'$17 an hour.
Eisenhower described recent capital pressures — a roughly $38,000 structural repair to the Fort partially covered by a grant and private gifts — and said the museum relies on a mix of gifts, memberships and volunteer labor. Commissioners raised concerns about the museum's mixed ownership and responsibilities with the city-owned fort and asked for documentation of any existing agreements that define who pays for utilities and repairs.
Commissioners suggested more collaboration with city tourism, ISU interns and other local cultural institutions, and offered to include museum listings on county tourism channels to boost visitation. The society agreed to provide its upcoming audit when complete and to return with any formal contract language that spells out responsibilities between the city, county and the society.
Next steps: the clerk's office will reflect the society's request in the clerk's recommendation, staff will check for existing contracts/agreements in the archives, and the society will provide the pending audit when available.
