Jackson Parish Ward Two board accepts reports, orders rescue truck and installs Starlink

The Jackson Parish Ward Two Fire Protection District Board of Commissioners met May 12, 2026, at the district office and approved routine reports and bills before adjourning at 7:30 p.m. Chairman Charles Hopkins called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.; Commissioners Ricky Cash and George Gryder were present and Rel Shaw and Bill Wheelis were absent.
Chief Leonard delivered the April chief's report, saying the department has purchased new uniforms and completed monogramming for half the shirts; the remainder and additional shirts for Mrs. Donna are being processed. He told the board the department received only one bid inquiry for the rescue truck and that only a single bid was submitted; he said the rescue truck has been ordered. Chief Leonard also reported that the Scagg mower required a new belt and hydraulic oil and filter replacement, both Ford vehicles had oil changes that day, and Truck 1 will need new tires next month.
Chief Leonard said Starlink has been installed and is online and recommended canceling the internet and phone line at the Reserve station because of the new service. He reported two attendees at April training and said new insurance from Hudson Insurance Group has been accepted and the payment is in the mail. He asked that an ad be placed in the newspaper to sell a small 5-by-8-foot lawnmower trailer that the department cannot use with its mowing equipment.
On operations, Chief Leonard reported April incident activity as 0 structure fires, 0 grass/woods fires, 2 motor vehicle accidents, 0 tree calls, 0 medicals and 2 other fire alarms. He said the district carried three tankers into Winn Parish for an "All Call" woods fire. Fuel logs showed 349 gallons used in March with 220 gallons on hand April 1; April usage was 220 gallons with 425 gallons on hand May 1.
The Purchase Agent's April report was presented. In New Business, the board reviewed the financial report for the month ending April 30, 2026, and the presentation of bills. Commissioner Ricky Cash moved to accept the financial report and presentation of bills; Commissioner George Gryder seconded and the motion carried 3-0.
The board discussed action-list items including fuel system cleaning and maintenance and the installation of ongoing signs in Ward 2. After board and staff comments, Ricky Cash moved to adjourn; George Gryder seconded and the motion carried 3-0. The meeting was declared adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
