Henderson approves CDBG amendment to fund Safe House shelter and Hopelink services

Henderson City Council voted unanimously on June 16 to accept a first substantial amendment to the city’s 2025–26 action plan for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
Housing and grants staff reported $56,928 in remaining CDBG funds (as of April 2025) and recommended allocating the money to local public‑service providers to extend services until the next award year begins. The staff presentation said the amendment would direct funds to Hopelink of Southern Nevada and Safe House emergency shelter.
Beth Laurie, CEO of Safe House, told the council the nonprofit — founded 32 years ago with land gifted by the city — provides emergency shelter, advocacy, counseling and outreach. She said Safe House served 221 victims and children since Jan. 1 (124 adults and 97 children), totaling 6,251 bed nights, and thanked the city for ongoing support.
Aaron Shees, chief executive at Hopelink of Southern Nevada, said the amendment is “more than a budget adjustment” and ensures there is no interruption in services that prevent homelessness, stressing that continued services stabilize lives and avert crises.
Councilman Stewart moved acceptance of the amendment following the public hearing; the motion carried with all council members voting in favor.
Staff said there were no public‑hearing comments opposing the amendment and that the funds will extend terms of current public‑service contracts to bridge to the next award period.
