Northfield EMS reports steady call volume; operations captain resigns, recruitment and new ambulance planned

Northfield’s EMS Chief Matt Wolkenbreit told the Select Board on June 16 that the department has responded to more than 500 requests for service since January and continues to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Chief Wolkenbreit said the department remains within budget while focusing on staff recruitment, retention and development.
Wolkenbreit announced that Operations Captain Tim Drumgool submitted his resignation to accept the chief position at South County EMS. Town leaders praised Drumgool’s regional service and noted his departure will create vacancies; Wolkenbreit said open Operations Captain and paramedic positions will be posted "as soon as possible" and EMS staff will cover gaps in the meantime.
The department is pursuing fleet modernization, with a new ambulance expected for use in the fall, and is maintaining existing vehicles to limit maintenance costs. Wolkenbreit said temporary EMS housing is meeting basic needs after minor repairs and systems work.
Select Board Chair Barbara “Bee” Jacque thanked Drumgool for his service and said his regional promotion should benefit Northfield and the county. The Select Board heard the update during its regular meeting and did not take a separate vote on staffing or procurement at that time; Chief Wolkenbreit said further recruitment and project updates will be provided to the board as they develop.
