Lacey Library board hears manager—s report on staffing, summer programs and new study room

At its June 18 meeting the Lacey Library Board approved its agenda and minutes, heard a manager—s report on TRL leadership changes and a 6—2-month executive search, summer reading and lunch programs, HVAC work that added a six-person study room, and service-hour changes at the Hawkes Prairie branch; a board vacancy was also announced.
Charlotte Deasy, chair of the Lacey Library Board, called the June 18 meeting to order and opened with a land acknowledgment recognizing the Treaty of Medicine Creek and the Nisqually and Squaxin Island peoples.
The board then approved the meeting agenda and the minutes of the prior meeting by voice vote with no opposition recorded.
Christina Hancock, regional manager for the Lacey and (transcript: "Hawkesbury") libraries, delivered the library manager—s report and district updates for Timberland Regional Library (noted in the meeting as "TRL"). Hancock said the system has named interim leadership and will begin a formal search: "the board is gonna do a 6 to 12 month search for a new executive director and finance administrator." She identified Andrea Bridal as an appointed interim executive director and Muriel Wheatley as the interim deputy director.
Hancock outlined summer services and facility work. She said the summer reading club "began June 1, and it goes through August 31," and reported increased checkouts compared with the prior year. The library closed June 1—6 for HVAC replacement; staff used that period to create a small study room that "can fit up to 6 people" and is available to book via the library website and the Lacey Library Facebook page. Hancock also said the Hawkes Prairie branch's hours changed effective May 11 to Monday closed; Tuesday—riday 10 a.m.— p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.' p.m., and that the change is working well for staff.
Outreach items included a visit by a DSHS mobile office for on-site assistance with food, cash and medical benefits, and a Thurston County Food Bank partnership to provide free lunches to children and teens 18 and younger during summer months (lunch served approximately 1:00—:30 p.m. on program days, with some blackout dates for library performers).
Hancock answered a follow-up about a previous large donation to the Lacey Library, saying the gift from "Raleigh Maupin" (as stated in the meeting) was an unrestricted donation used for library purposes rather than earmarked for a specific project.
Deasy announced that Pam Nelson has stepped down from the board and that the vacancy is being advertised; the youth representative position will likely remain open until the start of the next school year. The chair said the mayor and board chairs will coordinate appointments when applications are available. The meeting adjourned at 5:39 p.m.; several attendees stayed briefly to discuss books before the recording was stopped.
What happens next: TRL will run a district search for permanent leadership over the next several months; board recruitment will proceed through the mayor—s appointment process.
