Planning staff recommends temporary moratorium on data-center permitting as county reviews noise and zoning code

John Sattler, representing planning and zoning, told the Switzerland County Board of Commissioners on June 15 that recent data-center proposals elsewhere prompted a review of the county’s existing noise ordinance and zoning rules. He recommended that the board adopt a temporary moratorium on data-center permitting to allow staff time to review the code and draft any needed ordinance changes.
Sattler said the county’s current noise ordinance is the starting point for that review. Commissioner Ryan Harison said, during the discussion, that he was not aware of any outreach to Switzerland County or state officials by any party interested in siting a data center in the county.
An audience member asked whether zoning-board meetings are open to the public; the board acknowledged the question and indicated public access and transparency will be part of the planning-and-zoning review.
No moratorium ordinance was adopted at the June 15 meeting; Sattler presented the recommendation for the board’s consideration so staff can prepare code changes or temporary rules if the board chooses to proceed at a future meeting.
