The Arkansas State Medical Board voted Aug. 7 to sponsor the annual drug summit organized by the attorney general’s office and the state pharmacy board, after staff presented a tentative schedule and described a clinical track aimed at health‑care providers.
John Kirtley, who the board introduced as a presenter, told members the summit’s clinical sessions will review state PDMP tools and include a naloxone training with continuing education credits at no cost to attendees. “The CE is at no cost, and we always provide a meal as well,” he said during the presentation, describing the summit as a free public event.
Board members asked how much the board would contribute; a member proposed a $5,000 sponsorship to help cover meals and logistics. The motion to sponsor carried on a voice vote.
Board members said they wanted to support continuing education that improves prescribing practices and overdose response. Several board members later raised broader concerns about prescription compounding and the state’s limited authority when care occurs inside federal facilities, saying those issues would need separate attention.
What’s next: The summit schedule will be finalized and publicly posted once continuing‑education approvals are secured, and the board’s financial sponsorship will be processed as part of a routine operating motion recorded in the meeting minutes.
