The Town of Townsend board voted March 12 to approve construction of a 36-by-36-foot (1,152-square-foot) addition to the ambulance building to provide offices and meeting space. Steve Harkema presented the plans and told the board the project’s approximate cost is $170,000 and the ambulance service has raised about $120,000 in grants and donations.
Chairperson Monica Zeller moved to approve construction as presented; Supervisor Chuck DeMoulin seconded the motion and it passed. The board noted the ambulance lease requires approval by both the Towns of Lakewood and Townsend before work proceeds.
The meeting also recorded other emergency-service items: Fire Department Chief Herlache said she and Bruce VanOss recently completed State Drivers Operators License training and that the department has ordered three automated external defibrillators — two for fire trucks and one for town hall. Funding for the AEDs included a $2,025 grant from the Pamperin Foundation and $385 from Friends of Townsend Fire; board members thanked Supervisor DeMoulin for spearheading fundraising.
The board did not set a construction start date at the meeting; members indicated additional approvals and coordination with Lakewood will be required before building work begins.
