Townsend fire officials report new engine, AED grants and approve aid agreement with Lakewood

Fire Chief Herlache announced that "Enforcer Engine #2911 is here," and reported that the department has installed two new dry hydrants—at Surprise Lake and the north end of the Townsend Flowage—and that the ladder truck is listed for sale.

Supervisor Chuck DeMoulin said grant funding secured three automated external defibrillators (AEDs): one for the town hall and two for fire trucks; the board credited DeMoulin’s effort for obtaining the grant. Chief Herlache said the ambulance service will provide training on July 9 for board members, firefighters and highway workers, and a later session for residents.

Wanda Laste, chair of Friends of Townsend Fire, presented the group’s recent activities: a well-attended "push-in" ceremony for the new truck, plans for a Smokey ATV/UTV poker run to mark Smokey’s 80th birthday, and a June 15 committee meeting to continue planning. The volunteer committee said Townsend Fire will provide popcorn and baked goods and asked for community bakers.

Separately, the board approved a Memorandum of Aid Agreement with Lakewood-area fire departments that applies through Dec. 31, 2024; Chairperson Monica Zeller moved the agreement, seconded by Evans, and the motion passed. Board members said the new agreement is more specific to the two departments’ local needs given the situation in Lakewood.

The board noted several upcoming community events tied to the fire department’s calendar, including the Smokey ATV ride this Saturday and July 4 activities.
