Lee County lands $2 million federal appropriation for new highway facility

Jeremy reported that Congressman Lahoud’s office informed the county the House appropriations committee approved $2,000,000 toward the Lee County highway department’s new facility project. “The appropriation … is approved for a funding level of $2,000,000,” he said, noting the county had requested $4,000,000.

Jeremy described the next steps: the appropriation must clear remaining legislative steps and be signed into law, and, if enacted, the county would follow USDA and other grant processes to secure the remainder of the project funding and move toward construction. He said the county also applied for BUILD funding (a U.S. Department of Transportation discretionary grant program) and requested $7,000,000 from that program, but the two awards would be mutually exclusive.

Committee members praised staff for the multi‑year effort to secure funding and discussed grant management and reporting responsibilities. One member asked whether there is a required match for the $2,000,000 award; Jeremy said there is not a statutory match for this particular appropriation but the county will need additional funds to complete the project.
