Superintendent Nicole Permelli delivered an emotional farewell at the Jackson Township Board of Education’s June business meeting, reflecting on a 35-year career in which she said the district worked to preserve programs and create new opportunities amid fiscal pressure.
Permelli recounted the district’s recent restructuring and the challenges of a “flawed funding formula” that forced difficult decisions. “Education is not simply a profession. It is a calling,” she said, thanking mentors, staff and families for their support over her career. She noted the district has stabilized and highlighted work to protect student programs while adapting to new circumstances.
Students led parts of the tribute: student board representatives Peyton Brown and Colin Williams offered a closing reflection on the first graduating class of Jackson Township High School, calling the year “something much more meaningful” after the merger of two schools. The high school chorus, directed by Rebecca Young, performed a musical tribute. Several board members also offered personal remarks and presented a commemorative gift.
In her remarks Permelli said leadership will transition to Mr. Bighinski; she praised his commitment to students and staff and expressed confidence in the district’s future. The board’s comments and the student tributes emphasized continuity and gratitude as the district prepares for the next superintendent.
