The Town of Walkersville on April 8 formally proclaimed April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month and invited the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) to accept the proclamation and present recent service data.
Robin Grove, director of the CAC, introduced staff and volunteers and described the center’s work in 2025: “we served approximately 375 children and their non offending family members,” provided nearly 1,000 hours of trauma-focused therapy, about 60 pediatric evaluations and roughly 1,900 advocacy encounters countywide. In Walkersville specifically, Grove said the CAC provided 15 forensic interviews, two medical evaluations, 26 therapy sessions and 479 advocacy encounters in 2025.
Grove described the CAC as a “child friendly facility” that provides a coordinated response with law enforcement, Child Protective Services (CPS), the state’s attorney’s office, medical advocates and mental-health providers. She said the CAC receives referrals from CPS or law enforcement and that community members who have concerns should report them to those agencies so trained investigators can begin the protocol that may lead to a CAC referral.
“Prevention and protection live in the heart of the community,” Grove said, urging residents and adults who work with children to help create environments where young people feel safe and are empowered to speak up.
Commissioners thanked Grove and CAC staff for their work and for attending the meeting to accept the proclamation and pose for a photograph. The board encouraged residents to report suspected abuse to CPS or law enforcement rather than attempting to investigate incidents themselves.
The proclamation was read by the presiding official and resolved by the Burgess and Commissioners of Walkersville to recognize April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month.
