Paradise Township Sewer Authority approves industrial user site visits after elevated biological counts

Rettew Associates consulting engineer Aaron Dewald told the Paradise Township Sewer Authority on June 1 that biological testing showed elevated biological counts at the Hershey and Keim drainage basins. The results prompted the firm to propose three next steps: Industrial User Site Visits, Strategic Composite Sampling, and Strategic Grab Sampling.
Board member Bryan Stoltzfus moved to approve Industrial User Site Visits; board member Dave Bowman seconded the motion, and the board voted unanimously to adopt the measure. The action tasks Rettew with conducting on-site visits to potential industrial dischargers as a first step in tracing sources of the elevated counts.
The move does not preclude further sampling. Dewald presented composite and grab sampling as alternative or complementary approaches; the board did not select those methods at the meeting. The consultant and authority will need to coordinate schedules with affected facilities and owners and report findings back to the board before any enforcement or formal regulatory steps are taken.
The engineer’s report and the board’s vote are intended to identify causes of the elevated counts and to inform any necessary operational or enforcement follow-up. No enforcement actions or fines were announced at the meeting.
