Public Works Commission approves traffic and utility actions, awards contracts

The Tomah Public Works Commission on March 18 approved a series of traffic, utility and infrastructure actions in a meeting that lasted about an hour and 18 minutes.
Key votes included replacing a yield sign with a stop sign at East Monroe and East Avenue and approving installation of Monroe County Crime Stopper signs in city parks (placement to be approved by the Parks & Recreation Commission). Commissioners also approved an easement for Alliant Energy and a change to airport hangar fees to charge property tax on land-leased hangars and a fee of $0.25 per square foot.
The commission awarded the 2026 Superior Watermain Loop contract to BKC Construction and awarded the Townline Road lift station abandonment contract to Gerke Excavating. Commissioners approved a preliminary resolution declaring intent to levy special assessments and approved payment of the monthly water and sewer bills as presented.
On utility billing policy, the commission voted to discontinue the one-time leak credit adjustment; the motion carried with three ayes and one nay recorded (Commissioner Mitch Koel). Several other motions passed by recorded shorthand as 'all ayes.'
Several items were tabled or referred: a boulevard renovation proposal from a neighborhood representative was tabled pending a legal-liability review by the city attorney, and the placement of Crime Stopper signs in parks was referred to Parks & Recreation for placement approval.
The commission set its next meeting for April 22, 2026, and adjourned at 6:48 p.m.
