Commission approves triathlon practices, Manor House rest area and pickup soccer permits

At its meeting the Walkersville Parks Commission approved several park-use requests and heard reports from youth sports groups and public works.

The commission approved a request from the Boogie Bears Triathlon Club (coach Steve, S6) to run Monday-night youth practices at the community-park trails April 5–Aug. 10; the coach said he carries insurance and uses coaches and walkie-talkies for safety, and the commission approved the request pending receipt of proof of insurance. Staff (S9) told the commission that past years’ arrangements worked without incident.

Yellowfin Events asked to set up three tents, porta-potties and a rest area in the Manor House gravel lot for an April 18 cycling event; staff said organizers submitted required materials and last year’s event had no major issues, and the commission approved the request.

Marlon (S1) requested permission for informal pickup soccer on Sundays for about 20–25 players; commissioners confirmed unorganized play does not require insurance and approved the request.

Kenny Long (S5) requested the annual Civil War living-history permit for roughly 50 participants in September; he said the group provides insurance, polices the site and performs cleanup; the commission approved that event and discussed coordination with future pickleball-court siting. GVAA vice president Becky Haggott (S10) provided baseball updates and event dates; DPW (S8) reported playground-surface installation, mowing and open garden plots.

The approved requests were agreed by voice vote; commissioners asked organizers to provide current insurance certificates or other documentation as required by staff before events proceed.
