Leland Evans, a life scout with Troop 271, won approval from the Walkersville Parks Commission for an Eagle Scout project to install five native-plant pollinator gardens at Walkersville Community Park.
Evans (S3) presented site options, native species chosen with guidance from the Maryland extension service, and a materials budget that included bee hotels and butterfly boxes. He said tools and labor will be volunteer-provided as part of the Eagle project; his cost estimates listed a roughly $600 option per garden (plan 1) and a $1,020 option (plan 2). Evans said five gardens would total about $11,700–$12,400 all-in with tax, and he offered to fundraise; the scout requested the commission consider modest town support for materials.
Commissioners praised the presentation and asked practical questions about siting, maintenance and funding. Staff (S9) advised the group that the town manager or Burgess could approve the request without sending it to the commissioners depending on the final amount, and said he would approach the Burgess to seek funding support and confirm logistics. The commission moved, seconded and approved the Eagle Scout project by voice vote.
Evans said he plans multiple Saturday workdays and will finalize BSA internal approvals before the project’s “finale.” He left contact information for follow-up and thanked the commission.
