Glynn County proclaims Gullah Geechee Appreciation Week and renames library rooms for Matthew J. Permar

At its June 18 meeting the Glynn County Board proclaimed July 25–August 1, 2026, as Gullah Geechee Nation Appreciation Week and unanimously approved renaming library rooms to honor the late Matthew J. Permar; Queen Quet and library director Jeri Mullis addressed the board.
The Glynn County Board of Commissioners used its June 18 meeting to recognize local culture and community service: the board proclaimed July 25–August 1, 2026, as Gullah Geechee Nation Appreciation Week in Glynn County and unanimously approved renaming designated conference rooms at the Glynn County library in honor of Matthew J. Permar.
Chair read the Gullah Geechee proclamation noting the community's history and the county's practice of recognizing the week since 2015. Queen Quet accepted the proclamation, described planned events including a Gullah Geechee CREATE Artist reception and a Gullah Geechee Family Day at Penn Center, and thanked the commission and local supporters.
Separately, the board considered and approved a nomination to rename library rooms after Matthew J. Permar in recognition of his long service to local journalism, the library board and other civic organizations. Mr. Fallon described the board's process and noted library board support; Chair read a proclamation honoring Permar's life and contributions. Jeri Mullis, Glynn County public library director, accepted the honor on behalf of Permar's sister and recalled Permar's longtime advocacy for libraries and the local community.
The motions to approve the proclamation and to rename the rooms passed unanimously. The board indicated a reception would follow the meeting where plaques will be presented and displayed at the library.
