Taconic Hills highlights sensory-gym field trip for adaptive class; students and staff report strong engagement

At the June meeting, Taconic Hills staff described a field trip for an 8:1:2 special-education classroom to a sensory gym in Albany that is tailored to students with autism and other sensory needs. Staff reported that students who are nonverbal or use augmentative communication devices showed notable engagement; one student used his device to spell "play" and later "slide," demonstrating motivation to participate.
The presenters said the trip was provided through a program that offers free field trips to school districts and that it included equipment adapted for sensory needs, a PECS communication board and staff supports. Teachers and administrators praised the event as meaningful for student inclusion and encouraged continuation of similar opportunities.
Student board members reported on senior activities including an overnight senior trip to Pocono Valley and a day in New York City, prom held at a local venue, and athletic highlights (the varsity baseball team reached the section final and won a section championship). Student board members also announced three incoming ex officio student board members for 2026–27.
The board applauded staff and students for their work this year and acknowledged upcoming summer programs and strategic-planning activities.
