Board approves 2025–26 final and 2026–27 proposed budgets, contract renewals and new principal

The Mount Clemens Community School District Board of Education unanimously approved a series of fiscal and personnel actions at its June meeting, including final budget resolutions for 2025–26, a proposed budget for 2026–27, a second renewal of the district’s food-service contract, a bond refunding resolution and the hire of a new secondary principal.

The finance committee presented the 2025–26 final budget, reporting $17,100,000 in revenue generation, a beginning fund balance of $7,800,000 and reported expenditures of about $17,000,719. The committee said the figures yielded a fund balance reported at the session and recommended approval; board members voted in favor on a roll-call vote.

For 2026–27, the board approved proposed resolutions covering the general fund, food service, student activities, debt service and capital improvements. The committee presented projected revenue of $16,500,000, an estimated 6/30/2026 fund balance of $7,888,000 and total available to appropriate of $24,000,408; projected expenditures were $20,222,017 with an estimated 6/30/2027 fund balance of $4,186,418. The presentation noted a planning assumption of 810 students for the coming year.

The board also approved a contract renewal extension for Variety Food Service, described as the second renewal under a multiyear agreement and subject to state oversight for school food service contracts.

On debt, the board adopted a 2026 refunding bond resolution for bonds issued in 2017; the motion’s proponents said the move would allow the district to refinance at a lower interest rate and reduce interest costs without increasing taxpayer payments. "There will be no change to the taxpayers," a board member stated during the discussion.

In personnel business, the board approved the hiring of Shelby Johnson as secondary principal after the superintendent read Johnson’s biographical summary and qualifications. Johnson thanked the board and said he was "humbled and honored to serve the community.”

The motions were moved and seconded on the record and passed by roll-call votes; the board certified approval of the listed items and moved on to other agenda matters.
