The Buckeye City Council opened and closed a public hearing on a proposed annexation of four parcels totaling 49.617 acres roughly 1,350 feet south of the southwest corner of 269th Avenue and the Lower Buckeye Road alignment, city staff said.
Staff presenter Ken Galica told the council the surrounding properties are largely undeveloped and used for agriculture, the county zoning is Rural 43 (one-acre lots), and the city’s general plan currently lists a designation transcribed in the record as "business counters." Galica said the annexation "does meet all of the eligibility requirements as outlined in Arizona revised statutes" and that staff has no outstanding issues. He told the council a minor general-plan amendment and an amendment to a master-plan community to add the land could come back to the council on July 7 or after the summer break.
Mayor Osborne opened the hearing, asked for speaker request cards and, seeing none, closed the public hearing. No members of the public appeared to comment on the annexation at this meeting.
Galica also told the council the city prefers to annex properties in order to apply the city’s higher development standards rather than leave land in county jurisdiction. The council did not take final action on the annexation at this meeting; staff indicated related applications and amendments will be scheduled for future consideration.
