Sugar Hill to boost highway fund to $125,000; Streeter Pond Road project submitted to FEMA

The Sugar Hill Selectmen agreed on Jan. 27, 2025 to increase the town's non-lapsing highway fund transfer by $50,000 on top of the customary $75,000, bringing this year's planned allocation to $125,000 to support resurfacing and routine maintenance. The increase followed a presentation by Road Committee members and Road Agent Doug Glover on long-range road needs.
Road Agent Doug Glover told the board the highway department can add additional parking at the Crapo Building using town crews; he estimated material costs at about $6,500 and said paving would be scheduled next year. The board approved use of the Crapo Building and the Meetinghouse by the Pine Hill Singers for rehearsals and a June concert.
Chief Clark has submitted the final, third phase of the Streeter Pond Road/Indian Brook project to FEMA, the minutes say, and Eversource work has already begun on Streeter Pond Road according to a three-week look-ahead schedule provided to the board.
The board discussed driveway permit regulations that arose during Master Plan work; Selectman Margo Connors said she will contact Tara for follow-up. Road Agent Glover said contractors frequently do not receive copies of issued permits and indicated support for clarifying the process. The board also discussed creating a scenic pull-off on Route 117 so the Peckett's First Ski School sign could be relocated to a safer spot where vehicles currently stop to take photographs.
Selectman Margo Connors said the town will ready a pond on Birches Road so the Fire Department can install a dry hydrant; Connors will pay for engineering and pond work, Road Agent Glover will install a swale with stone to divert water as needed, and Chief Clark indicated the site selection is important for fire operations. The board recorded these items as part of long-range infrastructure planning.
