The East Lyme Zoning Commission voted on June 18 to deny a proposed text amendment that would have allowed storage facilities in commercial (CA) zones by special permit.
Commissioners noted the town already has a light-industrial zone intended for larger storage uses and expressed concern that expanding allowable uses in commercial zones would alter neighborhood character and introduce intrusive development near residences. One commissioner said the CA and CB commercial districts contain many small, neighborhood-serving businesses and residences and that the text change could permit intrusive large-scale storage uses in inappropriate locations.
A motion to deny the amendment carried on a recorded vote at the June 18 meeting; the commission instructed staff to publish the outcome per requirements.
