Commission approves Olympic Taekwondo Academy special permit at Midway Plaza

The East Lyme Zoning Commission approved (6–0) a special permit on June 18 for Olympic Taekwondo Academy to operate an indoor martial-arts training facility at Midway Plaza, 170 Flanders Road, Unit D10.
Applicant Kyung Moon Hyun described the operation as supervised, scheduled instruction (not an open gym), with a training area, waiting room and bathrooms inside a roughly 3,000-square-foot space. Hyun said class sizes would top out at about 25 people including the instructor and that he expects to teach all levels from beginners to black belt. Staff noted the plaza provides 124 shared on-site parking spaces and the unit has 12 dedicated spaces.
Commissioners asked about hours, class sizes and the number of instructors; Hyun told the board he would be the sole instructor and that classes would be segregated by age and skill level.
The commission recorded a unanimous vote to approve the special permit; conditions and the project narrative will be part of the permit record.
