Saint John’s contractors to use 135-foot crane; board approves brief Fremont Street closures

The Peru Board of Public Works on Tuesday approved temporary closures on Fremont Street to allow contractors to repair and refasten metal flashing around the steeple of Saint John’s Church.
Kurt Crosskopf, the church’s representative, said Dom Brothers Contractors will bring a 135-foot crane and may refabricate damaged flashing pieces on site. "They're gonna bring a 135 foot crane in there to be able to get up there and reattach it with screws," Crosskopf said, adding the work should take three days: June 30, July 1 and July 2. He also noted some crews might employ steeple jacks and rope access.
Board members discussed sidewalk and street safety if the contractors move operations near the sidewalk and asked that any sidewalk work be properly blocked off. Police and fire asked that residents and affected properties be notified in advance and that barricade responsibilities be clarified; Crosskopf said the contractors would coordinate with the city.
The board approved the closure after a motion and second. Members also discussed whether the city should provide barricades and noted the project’s proximity to local residences; the motion passed by voice vote.
The board recorded no formal permit condition beyond the standard requirement that the contractor coordinate with police and fire and ensure safe pedestrian and vehicle detours while the work is underway.
