Board approves one-day Miami Street closure for school tree removal

Peru Mayor John Stewart and the Board of Public Works on Tuesday approved a one-day closure of half a block of Miami Street to allow Preet Community Schools to remove six trees near the district’s central office.
Trent McCormick, identified in the agenda as the school’s representative, told the board the work could be completed in one day if crews drop and work the trees quickly. "It probably would need to be half the block from 3rd Street to the alley," McCormick said, describing the section of Miami that would be affected.
Fire and police said they could accommodate a short, single-day closure but emphasized maintaining emergency access. Chief Eller told the board, "If it's a short time, we could probably make by with it," and dispatch procedures were described so police, fire and EMS would be alerted if the date is set.
Board members pressed for certainty on timing and utility checks. The mayor asked McCormick to coordinate the specific date with Todd (traffic) and to notify fire and police; McCormick said the group would be flexible. The board’s motion approved a one-day blockade from the alley between 2nd and 3rd Street to 3rd Street on Miami, with the applicant responsible for debris removal and for coordinating notification with emergency services.
The board voted by voice to approve the closure with conditions, and members asked the school to provide the confirmed date so dispatch can broadcast the temporary change to responders.
