Shell Lake council swears in mayor and alderpersons, approves committee appointments

Shell Lake — Mayor Rowie Hansberger called the Shell Lake City Council re-organizational meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. on April 21, 2026. Andy Eiche, city administrator/clerk/treasurer, administered the oath of office to newly elected alderpersons Steve Byrd, Ken Schultz and Dan Harrington and swore in Mayor Hansberger.
Hansberger presented the council committee appointments, including chairs and members for Executive/Human Resources, General Administration, Financial Administration, Park and Recreation, Public Works and several council liaisons. The council approved the appointments on a motion by Stephen Smith, seconded by Ken Schultz; the motion carried unanimously.
The council next nominated Tom Rasmussen as the council member assigned to the Plan Commission. Smith moved, seconded by Schultz, to nominate Rasmussen; Smith then moved, seconded by Steve Byrd, to close nominations and cast a unanimous vote for Rasmussen. The nomination was carried unanimously.
The mayor announced a set of city designations: City Assessor Nate Carlson; Health Officer — the Washburn County Health & Human Services Director; Official Newspaper — Spooner Advocate; Official Depository — Shell Lake State Bank; and City Attorney Kathy zumBrunnen. Ken Schultz moved, seconded by Terry Severson, to approve the designations as listed; the motion carried unanimously.
On a motion from Stephen Smith, seconded by Tom Rasmussen, the council nominated Ken Schultz as City Council President. There being no further nominations, Schultz was elected by unanimous vote. Ken Schultz then moved, seconded by Terry Severson, to adjourn; the meeting adjourned at 5:39 p.m.
The re-organizational meeting set committee chairs, council liaisons and official city designations for the coming term. No substantive policy decisions or budget actions were taken at this short organizational meeting.
