MMCC Committee agrees to pursue responsible logging on Temple land, plans two warrant articles

The MMCC Committee agreed at its Jan. 5 meeting to pursue responsible logging on a piece of Temple-owned land as a potential revenue source and to prepare two warrant articles for Town Meeting: one to authorize logging on a selected parcel and one to establish a Building & Maintenance & Construction Trust Fund to receive the proceeds.
Committee members acknowledged differing views on whether the town-owned acreage should be conserved, subdivided or logged, but an emerging consensus favored a carefully managed harvest to produce revenue for town needs. The committee recorded a working timber-value estimate of about $1,500 per acre, a figure members said will need verification during the warrant-drafting and permitting process.
The committee described the proposals as preliminary and contingent on selecting a specific parcel, completing any required environmental or conservation reviews, and securing the Select Board’s and, if applicable, Town Meeting approval. No formal vote or ordinance number was recorded; the committee framed the next step as drafting warrant language and bringing it forward at Town Meeting.
At the meeting, committee member Clay Lennartz was assigned to draft the two warrant articles. The committee will review the draft warrant language and related materials in advance of its February meeting and as part of Town Meeting preparations.
