Tamworth road committee directs map corrections and selects location for Mill Hill discontinuance

The Tamworth Road Study Committee on May 7, 2025 reviewed revised local and state road reports, ordered map corrections to reflect maintenance and historical layouts, and voted to select the location of an 1884 discontinuance at Mill Hill.

The committee — whose members present were David Little, Paul King, Ron Remick, Willie Farnum, David Halpin and Chris Conrod — accepted the minutes of April 2, 2025 and then moved into detailed review of revised road reports submitted by committee member Chris Conrod and state-report materials reviewed by Paul King.

Why it matters: the committee’s edits affect how roads are classified on official town maps and can change perceived maintenance responsibility. Several items raised will clarify whether segments are locally maintained, the historical layout to be shown on maps, and which paths should be designated Class VI (not regularly maintained by the town).

Map and report edits directed - Mill Brook (Class VI): add the USGS map to the file to clarify the layout. The committee asked staff to include that map in the Mill Brook VI report. - Osgood Road (Class VI): accepted unless evidence of the 1922 town meeting result is found; committee asked members to check historic meeting records. - Irene’s Way (Class VI): accepted as revised. - Chocorua Lake Road / Red Gate Path: the committee directed that Red Gate Path be shown as Class VI on the map and to add a notation that Chocorua Lake Conservancy (CLC) maintains the bridge railings. - Sanger Lot #6 Road (D) and Cleveland Hill Road (V): accepted as submitted. - Old Mail Road (VI): editorial/layout correction requested — add an initial “S” before G. Philbrick in the first paragraph and reflect that in both layout and discussion text. - Chocorua Lake Road–Runnells (D), Washington Hill Road (D) and Old River Road (D): committee asked for map adjustments; for Old River Road, the committee instructed staff to show the 1801 layout in a boxed inset beneath the highway and to fix the discontinuance reference format.

State road reports and White Lake/Old Depot Road Paul King presented revised state-road materials for Route 25 and Route 16, which the committee accepted. The group discussed Old Depot Road adjacent to White Lake State Park: although New Hampshire Department of Transportation (DOT) lists a portion as a Class III state road, the committee noted DOT does not maintain that section. The committee agreed to retain the segment’s classification as Class VI on the town map to reflect local maintenance status.

Vote on Mill Hill discontinuance The committee considered an ambiguous 1884 discontinuance near the 1882 county layout at Mill Hill and recorded a vote on the location. The recorded results were: “Top of Mill Hill to the old bridge” — 4 votes; “Top of Mill Hill to county layout” — 1 vote; “Don’t know” — 1 vote. The committee agreed to keep the discontinuance located as shown in the committee report.
