Tamworth committee identifies multiple historic road actions missing from reports as indexing project progresses

DAVID LITTLE, a member listed as present, told the Tamworth Road Study Committee on March 19, 2025 that his indexing project for the town’s road reports and road-action spreadsheets is “in progress” and can be used to identify discrepancies and needed revisions. He said he will send committee secretary Chris Conrod a link to the file names and pledged to check Volume 11 in the online town records against Volume 11 in the spreadsheets.

Committee members used the indexing work to flag a series of historic road actions that are missing or need expanded documentation in the committee’s reports. Items the committee marked for follow-up include: - Brown Hill Road (1785-06-30-00): flagged as likely belonging in the committee’s “Unknown” list and not currently captured in reports. - Jackman Pond Road (1801-06-29-04): recorded as a vote to lay out; the committee noted the layout appears in the report but recommended adding a clearer reference to the vote. - Red Gate Path (1836-06-08-00): needs to be added to the report. - 113A Chinook Trail (1842-03-08-24 and a later entry 1909-03-09-11): one entry predates the state highway system and needs a Discontinued report; the other requires a separate discontinuation record. - Great Hill Road (1870-05-25-00): the committee recommended replacing a shorthand entry in the report with a full, long-hand version. - Chocorua Lake Road (1898-11-05-00): to be added to Class V and given a Discontinued report. - Route 16 (water trough) (1946-03-12-22) and Route 16 (Chocorua Village): both should be added and receive Discontinued reports. - Route 25 at Thompson Natural Area (1957-03-12-38): should be added and have a Discontinued report. - Bunker Hill Road (1957-03-12-44): noted as not part of Bunker Hill Road’s current file and to be added to the Old North Sandwich Road Discontinued report. - 113A (by Franchi’s) (1965-03-09-24; 1973-03-06-34): Paul King said he is waiting on a DOT plan to locate this precisely; when located the committee expects a Discontinued report to be prepared.

Paul King said he will check on the Old Trunk Line entry. The committee did not record formal votes on these follow-ups at the meeting; the notes list responsible members and next steps for locating records and preparing Discontinued reports where needed.

The committee’s work centers on reconciling historic layout votes and road reports so the public record accurately reflects both active and discontinued roads. The indexing project and the follow-ups identified on March 19 are intended to standardize references across the town’s online records and the committee’s spreadsheets.
