Surry selectmen discuss $4,500 speed-sign budget, appoint deputy and approve town business

At their Sept. 23 meeting the Surry selectmen reviewed options for solar and battery speed-control signs with an estimated $4,500 price for Budget 2025, appointed Jason Hammond to a deputy position, signed tax documents and approved routine payroll and bills.
The Surry selectmen met Sept. 23 and discussed a proposal to buy portable and stationary speed-control signs, set a Nov. 16 Master Plan committee date, approved administrative items and appointed a deputy.
The board reviewed options for road speed-control signs — solar and battery powered, portable and stationary, with speed-study capabilities and a “stealth” mode — and estimated roughly $4,500 for the 2025 budget to acquire them. Selectmen said the signs are intended to support speed-control efforts on town roads.
The meeting also included routine administrative actions: the selectmen signed a timber tax for Bill Russell and a tax warrant for Carolyn Berglund, signed payroll and paid outstanding bills. The board verified four payments to Trahan and noted receipt of a state letter related to "60 A" for the auditor (the minutes do not specify the letter’s contents).
Jason Hammond was appointed by the Town Clerk to a deputy position. Jay Croteau motioned to accept the minutes; Steve Goldsmith seconded and the board approved that motion. The board adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
Other items discussed included billing the state for roadside mowing performed by Durwin Clark on the state portion of Old Walpole Road, an update from Bruce Smith that the school retained income of $30,009.64 will be amended by the school administrator before audit and tax setting, and a report that John Davis has submitted Health Officer information and will complete a required three-hour training online. The board also permitted Jeremy Fored to place a game camera in the Graf Forest in compliance with state regulations.
Ron Profaizer cited RSA 447:16 when discussing a performance bond requirement for contractor MME for work over $35,000; the minutes note MME has requested a one-third down payment for the job. The board tabled a request from Bruce Smith for a town financial-administration position until the next meeting. Steve Goldsmith will obtain quotes to repaint porch columns and the town hall main hall columns, and Jay Croteau will contact Trout Unlimited and Fish and Game regarding erosion at the Avery property.
The selectmen set Nov. 16 for the Master Plan committee and asked Jill Lane to consult with Avitar about the data needed for plan preparation. The highway department bathroom was reported as partially completed.
The board’s actions were procedural and administrative in nature; no regulatory changes or large contracts were approved at the meeting. The selectmen agreed to adjourn at 9:15 p.m.
