The Newman‑Crows Landing Unified School District board on June 18 approved a change order to regrade the perimeter of the high‑school football field so the grass meets the new track drain and removes an approximately 6‑inch trip hazard.
Mr. Vargas, who presented the request, said the change is needed because the track elevation cannot be altered and it would be “very costly to change the elevation of the concrete slabs,” so the district proposed to regrade about 20 feet around both the home and visitor sides instead. “If we do not make up this transition difference, we would have a 6 inch trip hazard,” Vargas said.
Vargas provided a cost estimate: a base amount of $34,259, a 5 percent contractor markup and a 1 percent bond fee of $359.72, yielding a total of $36,331.75 for the grading portion of the change order. The chair confirmed the board will pay for the work with bond funds.
A trustee moved and seconded the measure; the board voted to approve the grading change order with aye votes from members present and one member absent. The district’s staff and contractor will proceed with the regrading work as approved, and trustees said the action keeps the broader track replacement schedule on track.
