During the public-comment portion of its June 8 meeting, the Shell Lake City Council heard a resident question the need for a second property assessment series and received an explanation of what the assessor reviewed.
Bob Hapy told the council he was concerned about notification for recent revaluation letters and asked why another revaluation was conducted after a full revaluation in 2024. City Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer Andrew Eiche explained the 2024 effort was a full revaluation involving walk-through inspections of properties, while the city’s more recent action was a market-adjustment revaluation limited to evaluating sales and net new construction over the past two years to adjust values up or down based on market activity. Eiche told residents who wished to discuss individual assessments that they could call the assessor’s office or meet the assessor at an Open Book session on June 11 at City Hall.
Also during public comment, Jason Bartholomew introduced himself as a candidate for Washburn County Sheriff, summarized his background as an investigator and a former SWAT team leader and outlined priorities he would pursue if elected. Bartholomew addressed the audience but did not present an item requiring council action.
The council’s discussion did not produce any formal changes to assessment policy; Eiche’s explanation clarified the difference between a full revaluation and a market-adjustment revaluation and directed residents to the Open Book for individual review.
