The council considered a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute agreements with several local organizations for recommended funding from the Mexico tourism tax. Vicki (Speaker 11), reporting for the tourism commission, summarized three requests: Mexico FFA chapter requested $5,000 for a tractor pull in May, Mexico Village Square Association requested $7,500 for advertising for a downtown Jeep event, and a $5,000 request for a Maximo events app that the commission declined.
Councilmembers questioned whether recommended amounts were sufficient to support the events and whether the tourism fund could support higher awards. Councilmember (Speaker 3) proposed and later offered a formal amendment to increase the FFA allocation to $3,000 (from $2,000 recommended), fund the Jeep event at $7,500, and add $5,000 for an event referred to as Mighty Momex. After procedural adjustments and a recorded roll-call vote, the council approved the resolution as amended.
Vicki noted the tourism fund balance is roughly $260,000; staff reminded the council that reimbursements are limited to actual expenditures documented by applicants. Council members encouraged new commission members to consider creative promotions and external opportunities to draw visitors.
