Town Manager Kristen Lass outlines June update: waterfronts opening, roadwork, retirements and summer events

Town Manager Kristen Lass delivered a June update for the town of Westford on matters residents should note for the summer. She announced municipal closures for Juneteenth and the observed July 4 holiday, the opening date for waterfronts, ongoing infrastructure projects that may disrupt travel, two department head retirements, a community block party and the start of the new fiscal year.
"Just wanted to remind residents and businesses that the town hall is closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, and we are also closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of 4th of July holiday that occurs on July 4," Lass said, noting the closures so residents and businesses can plan accordingly.
Lass said the town's waterfronts are scheduled to open at the end of June, on June 29, and encouraged people to "enjoy our beaches and great resources with the town of Westford, as well as get outside and enjoy some of our trails and open space."
She warned of continued construction across town. "The Boston Road reconstruction project certainly ramped up in April, and that detour is still in effect," Lass said, and added that the town's water department is working with a contractor to lay a water main, which may cause localized disruptions. She also noted ongoing intersection reconfiguration work at North Street and West Street and urged drivers to allow extra travel time.
Lass offered congratulations to two departing department heads: Will Nasser, who retired in mid-June after more than five years as chief assessor, and Paul Starett, who will retire at the beginning of July after more than 20 years as town engineer and involvement in large town projects.
The town is planning a summer block party on Friday, Aug. 21 from 6 to 9 p.m., a collaboration with Rodenbush that will include food trucks and family activities. Lass asked residents to "stay tuned and mark your calendar."
On solid-waste changes, Lass said pay-as-you-throw barrels are being delivered to eligible households. "You do not need to use your carts at this point in time," she said. Pay-as-you-throw bags are available at local retailers; residents should consult the town website or call ahead for specific store availability.
Lass also reminded listeners that the fiscal year begins July 1 and that the town will begin the FY27 budget process. She noted annual appointments for the select board have been completed and that she will be making annual appointments related to boards and committees; residents interested in serving were directed to the town website.
