The Mathews County School Board voted Tuesday to go into a closed meeting to discuss personnel matters and the superintendent’s evaluation.
Dr. Diaz moved "to enter into closed meeting in accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act," and read a list of subjects to be considered in the closed session, including professional- and support-staff resignations and appointments, professional staff discipline, fall and winter coach and volunteer coach appointments, and the evaluation of the superintendent. The motion cited statutory exemptions that allow local boards to discuss personnel and evaluation matters in private. The motion was seconded, and the board approved it by a voice vote after the chair called for any discussion and none was offered.
During roll call before the motion, the chair named members and recorded responses. Those listed as present or responding were Mrs. Lamanna Stigler, Estados, Estes (appearing twice in the roll-call sequence), Mr. Morgan and Dr. Diaz. The transcript records short acknowledgements of presence rather than separate, named turns for each person.
The board did not take further public action on the matters listed in the motion in the portion of the transcript provided. The closed session was convened under exemptions commonly used for personnel deliberations and employee evaluations, which restrict public access to protect privacy and personnel confidentiality. No vote counts or detailed outcomes from the closed session are included in the public transcript.
