Resident Myra tells council the city’s actions left her homeless, demands accountability

Myra, a resident who identified herself during the public-comment portion of the June 18 meeting, told the City of Kermit council that she recently lost her home after what she described as a decision by city authorities.

"They told me they wanted me to have it. They gave me hope. And then when I needed them the most, they vanished," Myra said, describing her home as a "safe haven" and saying officials later put the property up for sale. She urged the council to "demand accountability from our city officials" and to reconsider how powers that affect residents’ housing are used.

Mayor David Holbrook acknowledged Myra and said, "You did," referencing a response Myra said she had received the previous day. Council members did not take formal action on Myra’s statements at the meeting; the mayor closed public comment and the agenda moved on to scheduled items.

Myra’s remarks came at the start of the council meeting and were the most substantive public comment recorded on the permit and property issues that later surfaced during deliberations about RV-park permits. The council did not announce any immediate follow-up actions tied to her specific claims during the meeting.

The council’s publicly posted agenda and later discussion focused on formal agenda items, including presentations and permit appeals. Any enforcement, appeals or legal remedies connected to Myra’s account would be subject to the city’s records and code-enforcement procedures; those records were not presented or resolved on the June 18 meeting record.
