Committee approves amendment adding Shriners option to online donation bill for deaf and hard of hearing services

House Bill 25 49 (printer 3459), introduced by Representative Joe Hellenstein, would permit applicants to donate $5 online when renewing credentials via PennDOT’s website to support the Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) within the Department of Labor & Industry.
Chairman Nielsen offered amendment A03644, which changes the bill’s effective date to 25 months, makes technical corrections, and inserts language allowing applicants to donate $5 to Shriners Hospitals for Children facilities located in Pennsylvania. The amendment was adopted by the committee. Representative Hellenstein described the need for more American Sign Language and certified deaf interpreters and said the donation checkbox will help support live interpretation services.
With no recorded negative votes, the committee reported the bill as amended.
