Fostoria council hears first reading of 2027 tentative tax budget as finance committee flags filing deadline

The Fostoria City Council on Tuesday received the first reading of the city’s tentative 2027 tax budget after a finance committee meeting held just before the council session.
The Finance Committee chair told council, “We discussed the 2027 tax budget, which is due to the county auditor on 07/03/2026,” and reported that bank balances were $25,036,820 at the end of May. The committee said it had secured $50,000 toward repairs on the city mausoleum and estimated total repairs at about $100,000, and asked staff to identify additional funding sources.
Director of Finance raised a calendar discrepancy, saying, “Just to clarify real quick, it’s August 3 that the tax budget is due.” The two statements were not reconciled during the meeting; the budget was entered as a first reading with a note that the council may be asked at the next meeting to waive three readings so the city can meet the auditor’s filing schedule.
The item remains at first reading; no emergency action was taken. The finance committee also scheduled its next regular meeting for July 21 at 5:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.
The only formal votes recorded during the session were procedural roll calls (excusing two members, approving minutes and adjourning). No final action on the tax budget occurred at this meeting.
