Baboquivari governing board tables counselor job-change proposal, approves temporary board-secretary support

The Baboquivari Unified School District governing board considered personnel items during a special meeting on July 17 after adjourning a retreat session. Superintendent Mister Diaz proposed changing the college-and-career counselor job description to widen the applicant pool by lowering the minimum from a master's degree to a bachelor's degree and renaming the position to "coordinator." Diaz said the change would allow more applicants and suggested differential pay based on degree level.

Board members pressed for specificity before approving the change: they requested clear duty descriptions, proposed salary differentials tied to qualifications, minimum experience requirements (one or more board members suggested two to three years in a related field) and a definitive supervisory/evaluation structure. After discussion a motion to table the proposed job-description change so it could be revised and returned for board review carried unanimously.

Separately, the board discussed an extra-duty assignment to provide the superintendent with immediate administrative support and board-secretary functions on a temporary basis (stipend/hours negotiated). The superintendent said the posting and hiring process will be formal but that an interim arrangement is needed before the school year starts. The board approved the temporary assignment and subsequently approved the consent agenda by recorded vote.

Votes recorded in the special meeting: the board approved the revised meeting agenda and later approved the temporary extra-duty assignment and the consent agenda. The college-and-career counselor job-description amendment was tabled for additional review and return to the board with recommended edits.
